Start Your Morning in Carmel
A Big Sur road trip deserves a good breakfast.
Carmel Belle is one of our favorite places to start the morning. Its fresh, California-inspired breakfast, pastries, coffee, and relaxed atmosphere fit perfectly with an early morning in Carmel.
If you're looking for another coastal breakfast experience, El Bistro by the Sea is a great place to slow down and enjoy breakfast before hitting Highway 1.
There is no reason to rush. Wander through Carmel, grab a coffee, enjoy the cool coastal morning and let the journey begin.
Pick Up Something Sweet for Highway 1
Every road trip needs snacks.
Carmel is filled with places worth visiting before heading south, including Sea Shack Candy Company, where you can build your own bag of Swedish-style candy, gummies, chocolates, sour treats and other sweets.
For something with a little more history, stop at Carmel Bakery. Dating back to 1899, it is a Carmel institution and a perfect place to pick up a pastry, bread or dessert for the road.
Another amazing sweet spot is The Xocalatl Garden. A wonderful market in Carmel, Ca. A market for high quality, fair trade chocolate bars and products from all across the globe.
The best part? Save something for later.
There aren't many better places to enjoy a treat than parked at a scenic overlook with the Pacific Ocean stretching out below you.
Build the Perfect Big Sur Picnic
One of our favorite ways to experience Big Sur is with a picnic.
Before leaving Monterey, stop at Elroy's Fine Foods and build your own Central Coast picnic. Grab a fresh sandwich, artisan cheese, charcuterie, fruit, pastries, drinks or something from their prepared-food selection.
Pack everything in the car and wait until you find that perfect spot along the coast.
Big Sur has a way of turning a simple lunch into something you'll remember for years.
Grab Lunch Before Heading South
If you want something more substantial before the drive, the Monterey Peninsula has plenty of options.
Dametra Fresh Mediterranean in Monterey is a great choice for a quick and flavorful lunch, with Mediterranean favorites including gyros, shawarma, falafel, hummus, salads and bowls.
In Carmel, Sushi Heaven offers another great option for travelers craving sushi, sashimi, rolls and Japanese favorites before heading toward the coast.
Fuel up now because once you enter Big Sur, you're going to want to spend your time exploring.
Stay at the Edge of Big Sur

For a cozy European atmosphere, La Bicyclette brings together French and Italian influences in one of Carmel's most charming dining rooms.
And if fresh seafood sounds like the perfect ending to a day beside the Pacific, Flaherty's Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar is another longtime Carmel favorite.
There is something satisfying about spending the day surrounded by Big Sur's wilderness and ending it over a great dinner back in the village.
Raise a Glass to the Adventure
Before or after your Big Sur journey, Alvarado Street Brewery & Bistro in Carmel is another stop worth adding to the itinerary.
Grab a locally brewed beer, enjoy something from the kitchen and relax on the patio while talking about everything you saw that day or everything you're about to see tomorrow.
Sometimes the best part of an adventure is sitting around afterward and reliving it.

Big Sur will always be the star.
The redwoods, mountains, beaches, bridges and endless Pacific views are unlike anywhere else in California. But don't overlook the places that lead you there.
